A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: Hello Penny, Welcome to the Rise of the 90’s How are you, Let’s start out by asking where you’re from?
Penny Ford: I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. A German city in the Midwest of America.
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: It’s been awhile since you’ve been in the scene as we were in the nineties, what have you been up to since then.
Penny Ford: When I left Snap! I went to America and signed a deal with Sony/Columbia Records, continued doing some work with Chaka Khan, then took care of my mother and grandmother until their deaths…. Then came back here to Germany shortly after.
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: Who or what influenced you to become a Music Artist.
Penny Ford: It was in my blood as my parents were both musicians but I was influenced by a lot of Gospel and R&B Artists like Chaka, and Aretha to Steely Dan and James a Taylor. There were many.
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: Back in the day before „Snap“ you was a session singer, touring with Chaka Khan, Soul II Soul, and many more top musicians, what brought you to the „Snap“ Project?
Penny Ford: It was a project that Chaka turned down and I guess I happened to be in the right place at the right time and she sent me to Germany to do what I thought would be a three day project…. The rest is history….
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: There’s been questioned raised on how you wasn’t in „The Power“ music video, but one could still hear your voice on the song, would you like to tell me about it?
Penny Ford: No one knew the project would be this big so I guess they just thought they would get away with it… But by some miracle, we were also signed to Ariola Munich, along with Milli Vanilli. The company didn’t want the same disaster to happen to Snap! So they found me pretty quickly after that and went about the task of changing the perception……lol
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: „Change your wicked ways“ was your first solo single in 1984, the video featured famous actors like Stoney Jackson, Todd Bridges, and Aldofo „Shabba Doo“ Quinones, how was that experience for you back then, and how did the album do?
Penny Ford: It was a great experience and a reality check on what this is really all about. The company gave me no budget and I was friends with Todd and Stoney so they came and did it for free. I also called up some of my Soul Train dancer friends and they were in also. Todd’s Sister and brother were also in that video… Which was Extreme 80’s…lol
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: What collaboratons have you done in the past, and which one’s would you consider to be your favorite?
Penny Ford: I’ve done quite a few but my favorites are the more obscure ones…
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: I’ve come to understand that you appeared in a movie back in the day, care to ellaborate?
Penny Ford: I lived for many years in Hollywood and sometimes in between, I would try my hand at small bit parts for the experience and money. Also to extend my songwriting into television and film. I was in the movie „Ticker“ with Steven Segal and did some main title vocal work for several television shows also.
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: The public hasn’t heard a new song from you in awhile, do you have plans on releasing any soon or at all?
Penny Ford: Not really anything specific. Although I am always up for a solid experience….
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: What is your opinion of todays music, it’s message, and where it’s going?
Penny Ford: Well…. My opinion is that the Creative and the Corporate had a baby which results in what we have today. More music Business than Actual Music
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: When you’re not on the road, or in the studio recording, what do you like to do in your free time.
Penny Ford: Take very long naps…..lol
A.K.-S.W.I.F.T.: Thank you very much for taking the time for the interview, we wish you all the best in the future.
Is there anybody out there you want to give a shout out to…?
Penny Ford: Shout out to all the Snap! Fans who have kept me lifted up to the light for almost three decades. I live from some of the stories that I hear about where you were when you first heard the music. I thank you one and all…..
